| Abstract:Objective This study aims to evaluate the efffcacy and safety of dabigatran etexilate and enoxaparin sodium in the treatment of catheter-related upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) in cancer patients after the insertion of a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC). Methods A total of 81 cancer patients with PICC-related UEDVT were included in this study. Among them, 41 patients received dabigatran etexilate treatment, and 40 patients continued enoxaparin sodium treatment. The incidences of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) and bleeding events were compared between the two groups. Results There were no signiffcant differences in the baseline characteristics between the two groups. The incidence of recurrent VTE in the dabigatran etexilate group was 2.5%, and it was 0 in the enoxaparin sodium group (P=0.160). All recurrent VTE events did not progress. No major bleeding occurred in either group. The incidences of clinically relevant non-major bleeding events were 9.8% and 5.0% respectively (P=0.409). Conclusion The efffcacy and safety of dabigatran etexilate are comparable to those of enoxaparin sodium. It can be used as an oral alternative, but its long-term effects need to be veriffed. |
